Partitioning is a great way to achieve a better file system. You can sliced (partition) your hard disk drive in several partition. Either you make drive c, d, e and f, depending on the size of your hard drive. In this way, you can make drive C as your system drive and the rest as back up drives. The advantages of having back-up drives can be compared to having more folders where you can store or save files accordingly. You may use one drive in storing all the software installers so you don't have to download those files over again, not unless if it's corrupted or only one installers is corrupted. If one drive is corrupted, you can simply format it as soon as you want. You may also install different operating system on each drive but be sure how to do it. Another thing is, you can save time defragmenting drive c as it only contains most of your programs.
What if your Hard disk contains bad sectors? Can we still use it? Yes, as far as it is not totally damaged by simply avoiding those bad sectors and the damaged is not found in the beginning sector. That's what makes partitioning essential. Note that when HDD contains minor bad sectors, you can still use it by way of partitioning. Just like in a cake, you can chose a sliced which you want to eat.
If bad sectors is located in the drive C, then you can use drive D as your system drive. Either way around, that's how we can avoid the bad sectors. The point is different when a bad sector is often found in the beginning, where there's no hope of or repair can be done to it. Else, if it's under the warranty period then return it, so they may replace the unit.
This is based on my experience alone.
